Yes, this is the right time to start.

Start what? Training for the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Indoor Rowing World Championships. I’ve wanted to do this for, I don’t know, maybe 20 years? Pretty much ever since I sat down on my first Concept2, one of the old Model Ts, back in the fitness room in the basement of the new condo building my wife and I had moved into.

Only took me 20 years to get around to it.

So why now?

Well, let’s see. I took a buyout from my job and with my wife, Noreen, and son, Patrick, we’ve moved from Brooklyn, N.Y., to York, Pa., for Patrick’s coming school year at York Catholic High School. Brooklyn after 26 years, back to York, where both Noreen and I grew up. Back home.

Other than that, not much happening in MY life!

I brought my rowing machine with me on one of our back-and-forth trips. And I have to say it just felt right, yanking it out of the car and setting it on the cement floor in the garage, my new gym .

That was a few days ago, and today I got in my first workout. Twenty-five minutes at “jog pace,” as I call a regular fancy-free workout. Just pull. Our dog Skip in the crate next to me. (There is some symmetry in that. Way back when, in that basement fitness room, I used to take Patrick with me — all of a couple of months old — strapped into his car seat next to me.)

For now, that’s it. Except to say: I haven’t clue one as to what I’m doing, trying to do these C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints. Not clue one. Yes, I’ve been on the machine for 20 years, pretty much every other day after day. I’ve put in my time. But I never bothered even to learn how to use the electronic readout beyond just  to keep the time and the meters. Never got a around to it.  I’ve made up some workouts — pace-sprint-pace-sprint and like that — but just for fun and never to a goal besides the most important one — getting in shape, staying in shape, being in shape.

But I have always wanted to do the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Sprints. For lots of reasons.  And it’s just that now is the perfect time to do it.
