Jesuit Volunteer Corps

Four copies of MY FATHER’S HEART were included in the fund-raising efforts of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps’ 7th Annual New York City Spring Cocktail Reception. Steve joined the JVC Northwest in 1975 and in MY FATHER’S HEART remembered his experience teaching at an Eskimo-Indian boarding school in Alaska.

Steve presented “My Father’s Heart” at the National Council of Teachers of English national convention, a guest of the “Pennsylvania Showcase: Coming Home Again” series sponsored by PCTELA, the Pennsylvania chapter of the NCTE. At the November conclave Steve suggested his memoir for high-school summer reading lists and offered ideas for how to employ the book in the classroom. Steve was part of an author’s panel discussing memoir and “The Bonds of Family” at BookCourt in Brooklyn. His fellow panelist were Helene Stapinski (”Five-Finger Discount”) and Franz Wisner (”Honeymoon With My Brother“). The fund-raiser was co-moderated by Pulitzer Prize winning author Jhumpa Lahiri and Eric Simonoff, literary agent and co-head of William Morris Endeavor books department. Proceeds benefited the Brooklyn Waldorf School.

Pennsylvania Medical Humanities Consortium

In May Steve will be presenting MY FATHER’S HEART at the Pennsylvania Medical Humanities Consortium’s 8th Annual meeting . The theme for this year’s gathering, at the College of Physicians of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, is “Through the Lens of Time: Perspectives on Medicine and Healthcare.”

Bereavement Conference

Particpants in the inaugural Bereavement Camp Conference in Cleveland on June 26, organized by the Camp Erin Foundation, will find a copy of MY FATHER’S HEART in their registration “goodie bag,” compliments of Da Capo Press . Steve will be providing a signed post card for each book. The Camp Erin Foundation, was created and founded by the Moyer Foundation . Jamie Moyer is the ageless All-Star and World Series-winning pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.

Church Book Club

After an autumn 11:15 mass, Steve discussed “My Father’s Heart” as a guest of the monthly book club of the Oratory Church of Saint Boniface in Brooklyn, hosted by the Very Rev. Fr. Dennis M. Corrado, C.O., Provost, Breukelein Institute. Twenty-five book-club members participated in spirited conversation. Steve, who growing up was a member of St. Joseph Parish in York, Pennsylvania (much written of in “My Father’s Heart”!), has been a member of the Oratory for 15 years.
